Car insurance in Montenegro: Green Card or border policy?

8 minute read

Visitors driving into Montenegro need a valid Green Card or frontier insurance (Granično osiguranje). That is the rule for foreign plates from the UK, the rest of Europe, the United States, Canada and elsewhere. If you buy from Beinsurance, we do not send a PDF: Montenegro insurance is not fully online yet. We issue the policy at the office in Budva, pay there for you, and send a photo you show at the border. Officers usually accept it — the insurance is the paid cover in the office, not a piece of paper. From €28 for 15 days on Montenegro insurance page.

Car insurance in Montenegro — Green Card or Granično osiguranje at the border
The checkpoint wants proof of third-party cover for Montenegro — a Green Card with MNE, or a frontier policy.

The official wording is from the National Bureau of Montenegro (NBOCG): Green Card or frontier insurance. Travel-medical policies are a different product and do not replace this.

QuestionAnswer
What the border acceptsA valid Green Card for Montenegro (code MNE) or frontier insurance — Granično osiguranje. Official rule: National Bureau of Montenegro (NBOCG).
Who can enter with a Green CardPlates from Green Card system countries with Montenegro not crossed out. Check the bureau / MA list — do not rely on old blog tables.
UK and EU platesOften already carry a Green Card or equivalent. Confirm code MNE is listed and not crossed out before you travel.
US, Canada and other plates outside the systemA home policy is usually not enough. You need frontier insurance before or at the border. Beinsurance issues it online.
Kiosk at the checkpointPublished kiosk grid is often about €15 / 15 days, then month / quarter / year steps. That is the booth, not our tariff.
Beinsurance — what you receiveNot a PDF. Montenegro cover is not fully online yet. We issue the policy at the office in Budva, pay there for you, and send a photo you show at the border. From €28 / 15 days on the Montenegro insurance page.
What “€200” usually meansAnnual local MTPL for a car registered in Montenegro — not the 15-day visitor entry price.

Do I need car insurance to enter Montenegro?

Yes. Without third-party cover the border can turn the car around or send you to the insurance booth. NBOCG describes two lawful options: a Green Card that includes Montenegro, or Granično osiguranje bought as frontier cover.

Drivers from the UK and much of the EU often already carry a Green Card. Visitors from the United States, Canada and other countries outside the system usually do not. If you are not sure, assume you need frontier insurance and buy it before the queue.

You get a photo, not a PDF

Montenegro has not moved this product to a full online file. We do not email a PDF. We write the policy at the insurance office in Budva, pay the office for you, and send a photograph of that policy.

Show the photo to the officers at the border. That usually works: the insurance is the paid cover sitting in the office, not a printed sheet. Organising that office step — and sending you proof — is the job Beinsurance does.

How to check the Green Card country code

On a paper or digital Green Card look for country code MNE. A crossed-out code means no cover. Country lists change — use the current NBOCG / MA text, not a screenshot from 2019.

If MNE is missing, buy frontier insurance before you travel. That is the usual path for US and Canadian plates, and for any other visitor whose home certificate does not list Montenegro.

Border kiosk versus online — and what €200 means

Guides often quote a kiosk grid of about €15 / 15 days, then €28 / month, €80 / 3 months, €153 / 6 months, €205 / year. Treat that as a booth orientation, paid at the checkpoint, not as the Beinsurance tariff.

Beinsurance sells the same class of visitor cover from €28 for 15 days on Montenegro insurance page. You order online; we issue the policy in Budva and send a photo — not a PDF. “From €200” on local blogs is usually a yearly domestic policy for a car registered in Montenegro — not the price of entering for two weeks.

Frontier cover is Montenegro-only. It is not Europolis for the EU and it does not replace Serbia or Bosnia policies. How frontier insurance relates to the Green Card in general is in Frontier insurance as a Green Card alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need insurance to enter Montenegro?

Yes. A foreign-plated car needs either a valid Green Card that includes Montenegro or frontier insurance (Granično osiguranje) at the border. Beinsurance sells the frontier policy online so you can skip the booth.

What is green card insurance Montenegro?

It is third-party motor cover recognised by Montenegro’s Green Card bureau (NBOCG), country code MNE. If your home Green Card lists MNE and is not crossed out, the border can accept it. If not, you buy Granično osiguranje.

What if my Green Card does not list Montenegro?

Then the checkpoint will not accept it. Buy frontier insurance (Granično osiguranje) instead. Beinsurance issues that policy online from €28 for 15 days.

Do UK, US or Canadian drivers need extra cover?

UK and many EU drivers often already have a Green Card — check that MNE is included. US and Canadian plates are usually outside the Green Card system, so they need a frontier policy. The same applies to any visitor whose home certificate does not list Montenegro.

How much is border insurance Montenegro?

At the checkpoint, visitor kiosk prices are often quoted around €15 for 15 days, then higher for a month or longer — that is the booth, in cash, in a queue. Beinsurance online starts from €28 for 15 days; live tariffs are on the Montenegro insurance page.

Is frontier insurance Montenegro the same as a Green Card?

Same job on the road: third-party liability while you are in Montenegro. It is not a Green Card certificate and it does not extend to the EU or to Serbia or Bosnia. Those need their own products.

Is Montenegro car insurance €200 to enter?

No. Figures around €200 are typically a yearly local policy for a car registered in Montenegro, not the visitor frontier product. Entry cover for 15 days is a different tariff — our online offer starts from €28.

Can I buy Montenegro insurance online before the border?

Yes — you order online, we do the office work. Montenegro insurance is not fully digital yet, so we do not send a PDF. We issue the policy at the office in Budva, pay there for you, and send a photo. Show that photo at the checkpoint. Officers usually accept it: the insurance is the paid cover in the office, not a piece of paper.

Do you send a PDF of Montenegro insurance?

No. We send a photograph of the policy. The original is written in the Budva office. That is how Montenegro still works, and that is the service: we organise the office payment, you receive proof that cover exists.

Does Montenegro car insurance cover travel medical costs?

No. This is motor third-party liability only. It does not replace travel or health insurance for the driver.

Order online — we pay at the Budva office and send you a photo to show at the border. From €28 / 15 days.
