Turkey car insurance for foreign plates: do you need local MTPL?

A Green Card covers Turkey only when the TR country code is present and not crossed out. If TR is missing, you need Turkish MTPL (Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası) — Turkish car insurance from Beinsurance starts at €49 for a passenger car.
That is the rule for foreign plates and foreign vehicles from the UK, the EU, the US, Canada and other non-Turkish registrations: border officers check TR or a local MTPL in the national register. The customs import stay (often cited as 90 or 730 days) is not the same as the policy term — you still need cover for every day you drive.
Entering Turkey with a foreign-plated vehicle from the UK, the EU, the US, Canada or another non-Turkish register? You need either a Green Card with TR or local MTPL before the crossing — not a home policy that silently excludes Turkey.

Do Foreign-Plated Cars Need Insurance in Turkey?
Yes — without exception. Under Turkey's Highway Traffic Act (Karayolları Trafik Kanunu, Law №2918), every motor vehicle driving on Turkish roads must carry valid third-party liability insurance. This applies equally to Turkish-registered and foreign-registered vehicles.
This requirement is checked at the border upon entry. Without valid insurance, you will not be allowed into the country — no exceptions, no grace period, no temporary permit.
Important: The law applies to ALL foreign vehicles — cars, motorcycles, campervans, trucks, and even trailers. The vehicle type and registration country do not matter — insurance is mandatory for everyone.
Two Valid Insurance Options for Foreign Cars
Foreign-plated vehicles entering Turkey can use one of two insurance options. The table below is the short version; cards after it add the detail.
| Question | Green Card with TR | Local MTPL (Zorunlu Trafik) |
|---|---|---|
| Covers Turkey? | Only if TR is not crossed out | Always accepted |
| Who issues it | Your home insurer | Turkish insurer via Beinsurance |
| If TR is missing | Not valid at the border | Buy this before you travel |
| Online vs border | Already in your documents | Online ~15 min, no booth queue; kiosk is often cash and slower |
| Beinsurance car grid | — | €49 / 30d · €75 / 90d · €150 / 180d · €245 / 365d |
Motorcycle tariffs are lower and are not the car price. There is no 15-day passenger-car tariff. Temporary import (90 / 730 days on the Turkish customs site) is not a substitute for MTPL.

What Happens Without Insurance at the Turkish Border?
Arriving at the Turkish border without valid insurance has serious consequences:
- ✗Denied entry. Border officers will not allow you to proceed into Turkey until you have valid insurance. You must either buy at the border or turn back.
- ✗Heavy fines. If caught driving without insurance inside Turkey, fines exceed 10,000 TL (approximately €300+). Repeat offenders face even higher penalties.
- ✗Vehicle impoundment. Your vehicle may be seized until valid insurance is obtained and all fines are paid.
- ✗Full personal liability. In an accident without insurance, you are personally responsible for all damages — medical costs, vehicle repairs, legal fees.
How Long Can You Drive with a Short-Term Policy?
The minimum policy period for Turkey MTPL is 1 month. You cannot buy a policy for just a few days or a week — even if your trip is shorter than 30 days.
Available durations and prices for passenger cars:
| Duration | Price (car) |
|---|---|
| 1 month | from €49 |
| 3 months | from €75 |
| 6 months | from €150 |
| 1 year | from €245 |
Tip: If you plan multiple trips to Turkey within a year, a 1-year policy at €245is much better value than buying separate monthly policies. The policy covers unlimited entries during its validity period.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do foreign vehicles need Turkey car insurance?
Yes. Turkey car insurance for foreign vehicles means either a Green Card with an uncrossed TR code or local MTPL (Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası). If TR is missing, Beinsurance sells official Turkish MTPL online from €49 for a passenger car.
What insurance do foreign plated cars need in Turkey?
Foreign plated cars need third-party liability that Turkey accepts: a Green Card with TR, or Turkish MTPL. If TR is missing or crossed out, buy local MTPL before the border — Beinsurance from €49 for cars (not the motorcycle tariff).
Turkey insurance for foreign vehicles — is a Green Card enough?
Only if the Green Card shows TR and it is not crossed out. Many home insurers exclude Turkey. If TR is missing, the Green Card is not enough — you need Turkish MTPL (Zorunlu Trafik Sigortası).
Can I buy Turkey MTPL for a foreign-plated car online?
Yes. Order Turkey MTPL online with Beinsurance in about 15 minutes. You need your passport and vehicle registration. The official policy is emailed as a PDF. Passenger-car grid: €49 / 30 days, €75 / 90 days, €150 / 180 days, €245 / 365 days.
Online vs buying at the Turkey border — which is better?
Online skips the insurance-booth queue (often 5–15 minutes, 1–2 hours at peak) and uses card payment. Border kiosks are cash-only at many crossings and can cost more. The customs import stay (often cited as 90 or 730 days) is not the same as the insurance term.
What is the minimum insurance period for Turkey?
The minimum Turkey MTPL term is 1 month. There is no 15-day passenger-car tariff. A short trip still needs the 1-month policy. Temporary import time (90 / 730 days) is a customs rule, not a policy length.
Can I use my EU or UK car insurance in Turkey?
Only if that policy includes a Green Card with the TR country code not crossed out. Many EU and UK insurers exclude Turkey by default. If TR is missing, buy Turkey MTPL separately.
What happens if I drive without insurance in Turkey?
Driving without insurance in Turkey can result in fines exceeding 10,000 TL, vehicle impoundment, and being denied entry at border crossings. In an accident you become personally liable for all damages.
